VNS TO TREAT NERVOUS SYSTEM DISORDERS

We apply vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) to treat disorders of the nervous system, including the loss of myelin in multiple sclerosis. VNS can drive plasticity in the recovering nervous system and we explore how both invasive and non-invasive approaches can be optimized to restore function.

NEUROMODULATION TO ACCELERATE MOTOR LEARNING

VNS currently treats patients with epilepsy and depression. In addition, it may also produce cortical plasticity, and drive learning and rehabilitation. We are using animal models to understand the mechanisms of VNS-driven cortical plasticity, specifically to enhance motor learning.

NOVEL IMAGING TECHNOLOGY IN FREELY-MOVING ANIMALS

With our partners in Bioengineering in the Gibson Lab, we are developing the next generation of imaging sensors capable of capturing signals from genetically encoded voltage indicators.
